Submitted by the right-wing Republican party with the backing of the far-right camp, the motion was defeated with 151 votes against it and 114 deputies backed the proposal.

The French parliament thumbed down a proposal for the termination of the Franco-Algerian agreement, which made it easier for Algerian nationals to immigrate to France. Submitted by the right-wing Republican party with the backing of the far-right camp, the motion was defeated with 151 votes against it and 114 deputies backed the proposal.

The Republican Party, which staunchly opposes immigration, accuses President Emmanuel Macron of being too soft on the issue. They argue that the immigration law was revised three times without taking into cognizance the principles on which it is based ever being called into question.

The failure of the proposal came just days before parliament started debating a key bill on immigration. Signed in 1968, the accord confers a special status on Algerians in terms of movement, residence, and employment in France. Of late, there were noticeable strains in the relationship between Algeria and France over issues like immigration, trade contracts, and France’s colonial legacy.
