France and Senegal to further cement ties

French and Senegalese ministers will sign agreements shortly focused on youth development to strengthen bilateral ties, among other things. The two countries held an intergovernmental seminar in Champs-sur-Marne, just outside of Paris recently to discuss bilateral issues fast track development process.

 At the meeting, the two countries outlined major steps to be taken to strive towards evolving a roadmap for development, including in areas like education, sport and culture, economic development, sustainable agriculture, and also defence and security.  Senegal borders with countries that are affected by terrorism, and migration.   France is also planning to review its policies towards the Sahel region in the thick of resistance offered to the former coloniser, allegedly orchestrated by Russia, which the western countries maintain is lured by its rich natural resources of the region.

The last Franco-Senegalese seminar was held in 2019 in Dakar. The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the cycle of the summits, which were in a state of limbo since then.  France is the leading investor in Senegal and its largest trading partner. The French Development Agency (AFD) has committed nearly US$2.2 billion in Senegal since 2007.
