Situated in the trouble zone of the Horn of Africa, Djibouti is a strategic base for France. The latter intends to maintain its largest overseas military base there, which was signed in 1977 and again in 2011.  Paris has many reasons for wanting to retain its position in this small country, lying close to the strategic Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, which is the major trade route between Asia and the West through the Suez Canal. Djibouti is a small country with over one million people. The main advantage of the port city is that it’s a trade gateway to landlocked countries in East Africa.
