Former President of Tanzania Ali Hassan Mwinyi Dies: Rich Tributes Flow from Continent and Beyond

Former President of Kenya Mwinyi (98), who had been treated for lung cancer dies

Mwinyi had been treated for lung cancer. Mwinyi served as President of Tanzania between 1985 and 1995 and succeeded the founding president, Julius K Nyerere. It was a challenging task for him since many attempted to compare him with the towering personality of the former. Mwinyi had been treated for lung cancer.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan paid rich tributes to Mwinyi and recalled the services he made to Tanzania. Mwinyi was credited for introducing multiparty elections and easing state control of the economy. He was credited mostly for his liberal approach to governance.

Tributes came in from regional leaders also. Kenyan President William Ruto spoke of Mwinyi as a great leader. Kenyan Opposition leader Raila Odinga said Mwinyi was a ‘great African leader and statesman.

Ali Hassan Mwinyi, a schoolteacher turned politician helped dismantle the doctrinaire socialism of his predecessor, Julius K. Nyerere. Mwinyi was 60 when he took over the presidency in 1985 as the handpicked successor of Nyerere, who had volunteered to step down after governing his country since its beginnings of independent nationhood as Tanganyika in 1961 and its merger with Zanzibar in 1964 to create the state of Tanzania. Though Mwinyi took over the reins from Julius Nyerere, his critics say that he lacked his vision and stature, which went beyond the confines of the country and the continent.
