The flow of people and goods is increasing at the Tunisian-Libyan Ras Jedir border crossing. There were one million arrivals and 720,000 departures from early January to 8 August this year, averaging 8,000 travelers per day. Over 575,000 cars entered Tunisia through the border crossing and a further 465,000 cars left Tunisia.

According to media reports, over 40,000 trucks crossed the border to Libya as part of export activities, representing a trading volume of more than 4 million dinars.

The Libyan government in September 2019  closed the border with Tunisia, due to the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19 in Tunisia, drawing strong criticism from Tunisians and blocking hundreds of people at the border crossing of Ras Jedir. Sometime later, Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah announced the opening of the borders.  But the decision has not been implemented, due to the refusal of the Tunisian side.

Ras Jedir in Ben Guerdane and Dhiba in the governorate of Tataouine are the main border crossings between Tunisia and Libya. Their closure has led, several times, to protests in both countries. Since the 2011 revolution, the passage has regularly gone through closure dozens of times, creating difficulties for travelers from both sides.
