Five power stations to generate solar energy are being set up in the Suez Gulf area, and Kom Ombo in Aswan in Egypt, according to Chairman of New and Renewable Energy Authority Mohamed el-Khayyat.
The combined capacity of the five stations would aggregate to 1,000 megawatts; 500 megawatts in each area, which would entail a total cost of US$1.5 billion. Solar panels will be installed by the end of this year and will be ready for generation.
The minister also mentioned installing wind farms of 500 megawatts in capacity. The work towards that would begin next year. The government, the minister assured, will take steps for reducing the price of a kilowatt/hour of renewable energy. This, he opined, would induce foreign and local investments into the field.
Egypt recently has received accolades from multilateral organizations for showing resilience in its growth targets despite the fallout of the pandemic.
