Firefighters Face Off Against Table Mountain Wildfires with Aerial Assistance

Firefighters are ramping up efforts to control several wildfires in Table Mountain National Park as strong winds exacerbate the situation. South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that aerial resources will be deployed to the Cape Town City Bowl and Red Hill to aid in the firefighting efforts.

The fire, which began in Newlands Ravine on Sunday, has quickly spread due to gusty overnight winds, necessitating a swift response from multiple firefighting units. SANParks spokesperson JP Louw reported that all available resources from SANParks, Working on Fire, the City of Cape Town, and provincial Disaster Management teams have been redirected to key areas, including parts of Tafelberg Road, Red Hill, and Ocean View in Kommetjie.

In response to the escalating threat, SANParks has closed all hiking trails in the affected regions and is advising residents and visitors to stay away until the situation is stabilised. The fire poses a serious risk to the environment and nearby neighbourhoods, with authorities closely monitoring conditions as firefighters work to curb its spread.

Meanwhile, in the Witzenberg area, the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services have reported progress in managing several ongoing fires from last week. Out of five fires, only two remain active. Municipality spokesperson Jo-Anne Otto confirmed that crews have successfully contained the fire line approaching Witzenberg Valley, allowing the reopening of the pass. Efforts have also prevented flames from spreading above Schalkenbosch farm, though concerns remain about fire lines above Landliebe and Boontjiesrivier, located in the mountainous region between Tulbagh and Mitchells Pass.

Firefighters are continuing extensive monitoring and mopping-up operations on contained fire lines while actively working to control the remaining fires. Fortunately, no injuries or property damage have been reported so far. With unpredictable weather conditions persisting, authorities are urging residents in fire-prone areas to stay alert and follow safety guidelines. The situation is still developing as emergency teams work to contain the wildfires and safeguard both natural habitats and at-risk communities.
