President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö is all set for a state visit to South Africa and Namibia. He is taking a business delegation scouting for trade and investment opportunities in the region.

President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö is all set for a state visit to South Africa and Namibia. He is taking a business delegation scouting for trade and investment opportunities in the region.

The Finnish President will meet his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa in Pretoria. The topics of discussion include the geopolitical situation and security, global challenges, such as climate change and problems related to food security and their impacts on African countries, and the bilateral relations between Finland and South Africa. Both Presidents will participate in a discussion event about the countries’ joint opportunities of using smart, safe, and sustainable solutions for promoting sustainable growth. The event will also be attended by representatives of Finnish and South African trade and industry.

President Niinistö will address students at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg on the topic of how to respond to common challenges in the era of shifting geopolitics. During his visit, the President will also meet local foreign policy experts.

President Niinistö Namibian visits follow a November visit by Finnish Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Ville Skinnari, who also led a business delegation exploring the investment opportunities in Namibia’s energy sector, with a particular focus on green hydrogen. He will hold a meeting with President Hage Geingob to discuss the global political situation, global challenges, and the bilateral relations between Finland and Namibia.

Later part of his visit, President Niinistö will meet Prime Minister of Namibia Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila and Speaker of the National Assembly of Namibia Peter Hitjitevi Katjavivi and participate in a business seminar to be held in Windhoek. The conference focuses on accelerating the implementation of the 4th Industrial Revolution by leveraging partnerships and innovation to promote the Green Transition for job creation and eradication of poverty and Advancing Policy Reforms to enhance integrated solutions for sustainable and inclusive growth in Namibia.

The latest interest in investment opportunities by the Nordic country comes as the Namibian government has introduced ambitious plans to diversify the domestic economy, attract more foreign investment, and create more jobs. Finland is among Namibia’s top 20 trading partners. Overall exports to the Finnish market totalled N$1.8 billion last year, while Namibia’s imports increased to N$1.1 billion.
