Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi has taken the helm of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). He assumed office at the conclusion of the 42nd Ordinary Summit of Heads of State held in Kinshasa on August 17 – 18, 2022. He succeeds   Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi

Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi has taken the helm of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). He assumed the office at the conclusion of the 42nd Ordinary Summit of Heads of State held in Kinshasa on August 17 – 18, 2022. He succeeds   Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi.

In a hard hitting speech, the outgoing SADC president called upon member countries to be independent of external influence especially the Democratic Republic of Kenya. Specifically referring to the plunder perpetrated by the west in the DRC was a gruesome one, He said  the SADC should repent that it allowed such things to happen, he lamented; adding that those  things should not be allowed again.

The Kinshasa Summit is hosting a dozen SADC Heads of State. They have reviewed the progress in regional integration in line with SADC aspirations which envisions an industrialized, peaceful, inclusive, competitive, middle to a high-income region where all citizens enjoy sustainable economic well-being. The leaders resolved to be active in implementing programs to develop infrastructure and services in the region that are directly linked to stimulating economic integration and eradicating poverty.

The Congolese Head of State is also the current president of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS). The question of the Rwandan presence on Congolese soil was also reported to have been raised at the summit. The theme of the summit was “Promoting Industrialization through Agro-Industry, Mineral Resource Enrichment and Regional Value Chains for Inclusive and Resilient Economic Growth. Presidentship is a rotating one among the member countries.
