Direct Investment to South Africa in 2021 showed an outstanding increase of almost 800% in Foreign 2021 according to the 2022 World Investment Report published by the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The sharp rise in the figure was attributed to the intrafirm transaction between South African multinational Naspers and its investment unit Prosus of US$ 46.1 billion. Africa also received a record US$ 83 billion of foreign direct investment flows in 2021, predominantly driven by South Africa. In 2020, the continent received only US$ 39 billion in FDI, accounting for 5.2% of global foreign direct investment. FDI flows in 2020 slowed down immensely across the globe due to COVID-19.
According to Analysts, South Africa continued to be dynamic in dealmaking, in terms of both value and volume. In the first half of 2021 about 41 deals in South Africa worth US$46.56 billion were realised. The case of South Africa, they say highlights the key role of corporate activity and mergers and acquisitions. Many South African firms get attractive valuations compared to developed markets.
Some of the notable transactions cited include Heineken’s offer to purchase Distell, The Ardagh Group, an international metal and glass packaging company, an offer to buy South African glass manufacturer Consol Holdings and the purchase of JSE logistics company by Dubai-based DP World.
