The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in its latest GIEWS – Global Information and Early Warning System on Food and Agriculture (GIEWS) report has projected that three million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in Zimbabwe between January and March 2022. Apart from Zimbabwe, 33 countries in Africa have sought external humanitarian assistance. Most of these countries are affected by internal armed conflicts. The GIEWS report released four times annually monitors food security situation in all countries of the world.
However, the number of vulnerable citizens in Zimbabwe has come down compared to the same period in 2021 due to the increase in agriculture production according to FAO. Supportive government policies and conducive weather conditions led to a large maize harvest in 2021, of 2.7 million tonnes.
The food security crisis in Zimbabwe was attributed to high food prices and an economic downturn. The estimated 3 million people in need of humanitarian assistance between January and March 2022, in Zimbabwe, is largely due to poor food access on account of high prices and lower incomes owing to the effects of the economic downturn, FAO said in its report.
