Expert Sights Pain Points of US Brokered Peace Deal Between DRC and Rwanda

The internal problems of the DRC is more complex. The presence of several militant groups, such as M23, complicates the peace deal. They are present across Kigali and complicate any chances of a lasting solution.

The agreement signed between the DRC and Rwanda has been touted by many as a major step towards ending years of war in the east of the Congo. The United States, which brokered the deal, got involved after Kinshasa proposed a minerals-for-security offer.

But Dr. Samuel Igba, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pretoria, said mineral wealth is just one of the many drivers of conflict in the region and not the only one. The region is very rich in mineral resources like coltan, cobalt, and copper, and everyone has an eye on that.

Yet, the internal problems of the DRC is more complex. The presence of several militant groups, such as M23, complicates the peace deal. They are present across Kigali and complicate any chances of a lasting solution. Earlier peace deals, such as those initiated by Qatar and the AU, spearheaded by Angola, failed due to inherent problems.

These peace processes have not led to any tangible agreement for over 30 years that this conflict has been on.  There’s a gap that these two high-level peace-building and grassroots peace-building. That disconnect is continuing, and that’s why there is a question mark on the US brokered peace deal, which captured media headlines.
