Exodus of Health Professionals from Ghana Poses Problems

Ghana is not alone. Across West Africa, hospitals are losing staff to Europe, North America and the Gulf. In 2023, more than 1,200 Ghanaian nurses joined the UK’s nursing register, while at least 150 specialized staff left its main psychiatric hospital in Accra.

As doctors and nurses flee Ghana and patients head abroad, the continent is squandering trust in its own health systems. When nearly 300 specialized health professionals left Ghana’s Korle Bu Teaching Hospital between January and June 2025, administrators called it nothing short of an emergency.

Reports are that the trend would continue since there is a large pent- up demand for qualified health professionals in Europe and the US. Nurses and other para-medicos from countries in Asia like India have a considerable presence in these countries.
