The European Union (EU) has urged Rwanda to defray from supporting the M23 rebel group. The group has captured a huge land mass in the DRC’s territory in North Kivu province. Rwanda denies the charge of supporting M23, every time the charges were hurled at it. The United States also joined the growing number of western countries that have been pointing an accusing finger against Rwanda for chaos in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The statement of the EU assumes importance since it comes following the comments of the UN experts’ report indicating Rwanda’s complicity in abetting the militant activities of M23 between November 2021 and October 2022.

EU foreign policy head  Josep Borrell recently said the European bloc had urged Rwanda to stop supporting the M23. It has also told Rwanda to use all means to press the M23 to comply with the decisions taken by the East African Community, which has deployed a combined security force in affected areas of the DRC.

The statement by the EU was welcomed by DRC and called on the UN Security Council to examine the reports of the expert committee to consider imposing sanctions on Rwanda. In the meantime, Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame blamed Kinshasa for the chaos in its volatile eastern regions in his New Year address. In his New Year Address to the Nation, he said unwarranted blaming of his country for whatever was happening in DRC should be stopped.
