European Council President Charles Michel visited Tripoli recently  as Libya seeks to build a unity government  to end a decade of chaos following a NATO-backed 2011 revolt. However, no details of the visit have been announced so far.

Oil-rich Libya has been torn by civil war since 2011.  Last month, the foreign ministers of France, Germany and Italy were in Tripoli. They expressed their solidarity with the present interim government, which many hope would lead to peace and harmony in the war torn country. The interim government is preparing the country for the first democratic elections by December 24, this year.   Importantly, in the next week Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to visit Tripoli to reopen the country’s embassy in the capital after over six years.

Recently, France reopened its embassy in Libya. Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi is  also scheduled to visit Libya shortly. It is instructive to keep in mind that Libya is a major hub for migrants to reach Europe illegally across the Mediterranean.  Traffickers have thrived in the lawlessness that followed Kadhafi’s overthrow.
