The European Council has adopted sanctions against six entities involved in the war in Sudan for supporting activities undermining the stability and political transition of Sudan. The Horn of Africa nation’s regular army (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been fighting since last April. Violence in Sudan continued to escalate despite international attempts to forge a lasting ceasefire. According to various estimates, the war has uprooted more than 7.5 million people from their homes and created a humanitarian crisis.

The European Union has been condemning the escalation of violence in Sudan’s Darfur region, fearing the occurrence of another genocide. The violence which spread across the region between 2003 and 2008 had taken the lives of 300,000 people and displaced more than two million. These mass-scale killings are referred to as genocide.
