Ethiopia’s national elections will now be held on August 29, according to the country’s electoral body. The new dates announced falls in the middle of the rainy season, nearly two weeks later than what it was decided earlier. Many people have openly expressed their logistical concerns for holding the election and feels that people will not come out in large numbers to vote. World-over the election is watched closely since it is critical to the political transition of the country,  afragile democracy.

The election commission said that it was working very closely with the metrological department to find out the most convenient time to hold the elections. It is not clear whether there would be any further changes in the election dates based on the weather forecast.  In the meantime, President Abiy Ahmed exuded optimism of winning the election based on whatever reforms that he could carry out during the short time that he handled the administration. Undeniably, he carried out many far-reaching reforms that can help the nation to surge ahead.

That does not mean this year’s Nobel Prize winner Prime minister widely acclaimed as a reform man of Africa will have a cake-walk. The opposition parties are getting united to oust him. There were a few killings of his senior government functionaries depicting poorly the law and order situation of the country. Will Abiy overcome these imponderables is something experts say, one has to wait and watch.

If Abiy’s background is anything to prove his persistence and hard work, odds are seemingly in his favor since he has been a fighter for a cause in the unlike African way – through peaceful demonstrations.
