Ethiopia’s nine months exports have earned the country US $2.09
billion, registering a 10% increase as compared to the same period a
year ago, the Ethiopian Ministry of Trade and Industry announced. Yet,
it fell short of the target set for the period at US$ 2.8 billion.
The achievement, though belied the expectations should be seen that it
had happened in the backdrop of the pandemic, which disrupted the
supply and demand chains across the world. Exports of flowers,
vegetables and fruits, and Khat (sort of intoxicant leaf) exports
have surpassed the targets set for each, said the officials of the
Ministry of Trade and Industry.
Items like natural gums, coffee, electronics, textiles and apparel
export have fell short of the export target by 25% or so. Major items
that had taken the hit are exports of tantalum, oilseeds, pulses,
meat, species, and tea. Export of these items had underperformed
between 50% and 74% as against the target set.
