Ethiopian village gets sustainable tourism award from UNWTO

 Choke Mountains Eco Village has bagged an award from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for promoting eco-tourism. The village is adjudged among 32 villages worldwide as the best destination for sustainable tourism

Choke Mountains Eco Village has bagged an award from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for promoting eco-tourism. The village is adjudged among 32 villages worldwide as the best destination for sustainable tourism.

The Best Tourism Village (BTV) of 2022 award was received by Seleshi Girma, State Minister of Tourism of Ethiopia, along with village representatives.  The award function took place in Alula city, Saudi Arabia, and was given away by  UNWTO’s Secretary General at a function held in  February this year.

The tourism village is situated in Degadamot Woreda, West Gojam, 300 kilometres from Addis Ababa. In the Choke mountains, one of the highest mountain ranges in Ethiopia.  The village has developed sustainable land management and is promoting solar energy, biogas, and waste management with the active participation of the local people.

A total of 136 villages contested for the award. Of that, UNWTO recognized 32 villages as the best tourism villages. The selection was based on the promotion of rural tourism destinations with accredited cultural and natural assets. The award also recognized the steps being taken by the villages for inculcating rural and community-based values, products, and lifestyles.
