Africa’s biggest airline –Ethiopian Airlines- is offering operational assistance to South African Airways in terms of pilots and aircrafts, says, Ethiopian Chief Executive Officer Tewolde GebreMariam. However, the Ethiopian is not interested in partaking in the debt repayments. It may be noted that Ethiopian during the Covid-19 did not stop its operations as a passenger aircraft. It also helped ferrying goods and services across the world. Yet, its bottom lines are considerably affected due to drastic reduction in passenger traffic.
Analysts say there was a talk of Ethiopian taking stakes in SAA before it went for liquidation. The onset of pandemic considerably changed its strategic plans of the airline. Also, the legacy issues of SAA, such as debt, labor problems etc also must have influenced Ethiopian to limit its role to extend only technical support. The Ethiopian will now only help SAA.
Ethiopian is looking forward to have a favorable settlement with Boeing ever since one of its brand new aircrafts was crashed near Addis Ababa airport leading to death of over 200 people including pilot and cabin crew.
