Following 18 years of research, a new drug to prevent plant diseases, particularly coffee wilt has been invented by researchers in Ethiopia. Coffee is a major export commodity of Ethiopia making significant contributions to its foreign exchange earnings, the discovery is expected to have far-reaching impact for the country by boosting the quality and productivity of Ethiopian coffee at between 30 to 40 percent of Ethiopia’s coffee production has been suffering from coffee wilt disease. Coffee wilt disease (tracheomycosis) is a common issue that kills infected coffee plants.
The new drug will also help in replacing the imports of ‘Trichoderma Fungicide’ that the country has been importing to prevent plant diseases on flowers, coffee wilt etc. The unique feature of the new drug is that it will use biological fungus without applying any kinds of chemical.
Lecturer and researcher at Microbial Cellular and Molecule Biology Department of the Addis Ababa University, Dr. Tesfaye Alemu revealed that the new drug was developed from wheat straw, and residual flour, collected from Mill houses and other leftovers.
