Ethiopia’s president Sahle-work Zewde called for negotiations and other peaceful steps to end the country’s nearly two-year civil war. The President was addressing the Ethiopian parliament recently on the budget for the next fiscal year

Ethiopia’s president Sahle-work Zewde called for negotiations and other peaceful steps to end the country’s nearly two-year civil war. The President was addressing the Ethiopian parliament recently on the budget for the next fiscal year. She said that her government would always keep the door open for peace and continue to urge negotiations without any conditions.  However, she reminded me that the Government of Ethiopia would not tolerate any provocation by TPLF.

The long-awaited AU-brokered peace talks in South Africa were postponed without announcing any new date. The meeting between the warring sides in the two-year-old conflict in Tigray was viewed with great expectation.  The cease-fire announced by both parties was breached letting loose violence.

There are no confirmed figures for casualties of the war. Some researchers found the toll was likely at least 500,000. The conflict began in November 2020 and is still continuing.
