It is the Ethiopian leader’s first state visit to Kenya since 2020 and both leaders are expected to discuss several issues including Ethiopia’s negotiations with the breakaway region of Somaliland to secure access to a seaport.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was in Nairobi, while on a visit to Kenya, where he was welcomed by Kenyan President William Ruto. It is the Ethiopian leader’s first state visit to Kenya since 2020 and both leaders are expected to discuss several issues including Ethiopia’s negotiations with the breakaway region of Somaliland to secure access to a seaport.
As reported by www.trendsnafrica.com, Ethiopia signed a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland on January 1, 2024, which rattled Somalia whose authorities have vowed to go to war over it since it considers Somaliland part of its territory. On its part, Somaliland says Ethiopia agreed to recognize its independence in return for a naval port. Though Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia, so far no country has recognized its sovereignty.

Abiy Ahmed’s visit to Nairobi also came after President Ruto visited Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, for the 37th African Union Summit of Heads of State on February 16. Importantly, Ethiopia and Kenya concluded a strategic framework to promote bilateral cooperation in key areas of economic and social development. The agreement spells out removing unnecessary checkpoints, customs protocol, and systems at the Moyale One-Stop Border Post between both nations
