Several towns and cities in Ethiopia have held anti-Western rallies recently. The rallies were believed to have been organized by local governments in support of the federal government’s latest offensive in the ongoing war in the Tigray region.

Many people displayed banners urging the United States to stop supporting the Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF), while others were purely anti-Western. This came amid hopes for talks between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF to end the war raging across the region.

The Ethiopian government has warned several times that the international community must not interfere in its handling of the war in Tigray, claiming it is solely a domestic matter.

According to various reports and claims on social media, three additional nations are allegedly involved in the fighting in Ethiopia’s northern region Tigray: Eritrea, Somalia, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) accused neighbouring Eritrea of deploying troops in support of Ethiopia’s military campaign intended “to restore the rule of law” in the region.

In July 2018, Ethiopia and Eritrea signed a peace agreement and planned to promote “intimate cooperation”. There are reports that the US forces are supporting Tigray in the long drawn-out war by supplying them with arms and other types of strategies, a claim that is refuted by the US authorities. The US continues to decry the renewed escalation in the conflicts in the region and called for an amicable settlement of the problems through intermediation and open discussions with the parties involved in the conflict.

In the meantime, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that the war in the northern Tigray region would end and peace will prevail . He made the remarks recently when he inaugurated a talent development centre in Oromia regional state. He urged Ethiopians to work together for the country’s prosperity and not to be divided along ethnic and religious lines.
