Ethiopia welcomed the announcement that the US Development Agency (USAID) would resume the delivery of food aid throughout the country, suspended in June. Both the Ethiopian government and USAID have agreed to monitor aid distribution against the backdrop of accusations that the food deliveries were diverted to feed the military personnel.
USAID will monitor whether the Ethiopian government will abide by its commitments against the complaints that aid had been diverted to benefit soldiers. In June, the UN World Food Program (WFP) decided to stop food aid because of misappropriations.

As reported by www.trendsnafrica.com earlier, USAID in early October started a limited resumption of food aid deliveries to meet the needs of thousands of refugees. The resumption was meant for some thirty camps in Ethiopia, which hosts nearly a million refugees. They are mainly from South Sudan, Somalia, and Eritrea. Some 20 million people, or 16% of Ethiopia’s 120 million inhabitants, are dependent on food aid. This is the result of conflicts and a historic drought in the Horn of Africa, which have displaced 4.6 million people across the country.
