Ethiopia’s foreign ministry has called on the African Union (AU) to immediately cease a new commission of inquiry into allegations of abuse in the nation’s Tigray region. It was reported that thousands of civilians have been killed since the conflict began in November between Ethiopian forces. The Ethiopian forces were backed by neighboring Eritrean forces to inflict heavy casualties on people in the Tigryan region, leading to heavy toll of human lives and thousands fleeing the country to the neighboring states.
The continuing deadly conflict has led to warnings of famine and ethnic cleansing, thereby leading to expulsions of people by resorting to violence, such as killings and rapes. These are being looked into by the United Nations human rights office in an investigation with Ethiopia. The Ethiopian government also wants a joint probe with the AU’s new African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The UN body I said that it had not received any statement from the east African country criticizing the present inquiry as “misguided” and lacking legal basis and insists that its independent investigation will go forward in the spirit of impartiality. Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s government has rejected the allegations and asserted that it is helping Tigray to rebuild.
