The spokesperson for the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the US sanctions on Ethiopia over the conflict in the Tigray region was unnecessary and said that Ethiopia would appropriately handle  its internal matter. The United States’ sanction will  impose restrictions on economic and security assistance to east African countries.

As reported by www.trendsnafrica.com, the US has imposed sanctions on Ethiopia a few days ago, which that  country did not take kindly. As things turn out now, the tensions between Ethiopia and the United States are getting precipitated by imposition of  sanctions citing conflicts in the Tigray region, which has killed thousands and close to two million people fleeing from the war torn area to safer places. The refugee problem, according to the UN, has led to severe health issues necessitating huge  humanitarian aids  entailing several million dollars.

The spokesperson for the Ethiopian government had further said that Ethiopia was looking at dealing with its internal problems on its own and is expected to get support  from other countries to redouble its effort to handle the internal situation.  The US along with other western forces are of the opinion that the Tigray situation is deteriorating rapidly and the sufferings of the affected persons are mounting. Therefore, they want humanitarian access to prevent famine, epidemics, healthcare disruptions  etc . Including Britain, all these countries want an immediate ceasefire. The fighting continues in the region for more than six months.

The Eritrean troops and the Ethiopian military have been alleged to had taken part in   several massacres and atrocities during the Tigray conflict. They were also implicated.   Significantly, Ethiopia staged a massive rally in Addis Ababa to  protest against the United States for  imposing restrictions on economic and security assistance over the conflict in the Tigray region.  Those who took part in the massive rally were holding banners supporting the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), calling for the mega-project on the Blue Nile to be filled. This, analysts say, is to whip up the national pride to cash in the forthcoming election.
