Ethiopia proposes to set up several free trade areas and the one in Dire Dawa is the beginning. The National Logistics Strategy has advocated establishing free trade area for the benefit of the economy.
Transport and Logistics Minister Dagmawit Moges has disclosed that Ethiopia has decided to establish the first free trade area in Dire Dawa. The focus of the free trade area, she said will include areas of focus such as general trade activities, comprehensive logistics services, and import-export of the manufacturing sector. Accordingly, a detailed work plan and regular discussions on the proposal have been undertaken.

A feasibility study on the benefits of establishing free trade area for the country was carried out by a group of experts consisting of various government institutions. She also underlined that Ethiopian Airlines can play a key role in the establishment of free trade areas using its long experience in cargo, logistics, and management.
