Ethiopia has expressed its  interest in resuming Africa Union led trilateral talks with Egypt and Sudan on the controversial Blue Nile dam. This was conveyed by Ethiopia’s ambassador to the United States, who was the country’s previous negotiator on the dam  during a meeting with the U.S. special envoy to the Horn of Africa, Mike Hammer. Several rounds of talks between the three countries to resolve the outstanding issues about the dam have failed. For Ethiopia,  the multi-billion-dollar project is expected to bring electricity to millions of Ethiopians,  but for Sudan and Egypt,  the amount of water they receive from the Nile River after the completion of the project is a matter of concern and demands  a binding legal agreement in case of a dispute.

In February this year, Ethiopia announced that it has started  producing power from one unit of the dam. Last week, the foreign ministry spokesman Dina Mufti told media that the third filling of the dam is on schedule this year.
