Ethiopia will plant six million trees this year to increase the green cover. A movement towards that was kicked off by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed billed as the ‘’Green Legacy’’ project to promote eco-tourism and combat the effects of climate change.
At the launch of the campaign, Abiy encouraged Ethiopians to plant billions of trees. The project will continue till October. Over 10 billion trees were planted in the first two years of the ‘’Green Legacy’’ project. The overall objective is to plant 20 billion trees by 2022. Ethiopia will also send close to one billion seedlings to neighboring countries.
The critics of the ruling regime allege that it was a ploy to divert the public attention from the recent untoward incidents, such as conflict Trigray region, which caused killings and fleeing of thousands of people to neighboring countries. The postponement of the general elections also did not go well with Abiy’s critique.
