World leaders have hailed the ceasefire agreement reached between the Ethiopian government and Tigrayan rebels and termed it a forerunner to ensure peace in the trouble-torn region. The agreement was signed in the South African capital, Pretoria, as a positive step towards bringing peace to the region. The world leaders also pointed out that further negotiations were needed to broaden the political talks.
However, they have encouraged further negotiations in order to reach a permanent ceasefire agreement and launch broader and more intense political talks. The war has left thousands of people dead, displaced millions, and left hundreds of thousands facing famine.
It is not alone the leaders who hailed the pathbreaking peace deal; the common man in the street also welcomed the truce. Thousands have celebrated the signing of the agreement in the Ethiopian capital city, Addis Ababa, which was going on for quite some time but evaded a workable solution. The general mood of the people can be described as a sigh of relief for ending the year-long war, which took a heavy toll on both countries.
The situations that led to conflict in the region were complex. Ethiopia was almost ruled by leaders from the Tigray region for three decades or so dominated by the People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) before Prime Minister Abiy came to power in April 2018. He pledged a slew of political and economic reforms in Ethiopia after almost three decades of a government dominated by the Tigray region. Abiy Ahmed sent troops in to topple the TPLF in their regional stronghold after accusing it of attacking federal army camps.

Political analysts say that the agreement, though a good augury, does not address the deeper political differences between the two groups; but can be leveraged to work toward an enduring peace between the two groups.
