Ethiopia has received a donation of 250 ventilators and other critical care equipment from the US government, to help combat COVID-19. Michael Raynor, US ambassador to Ethiopia, while handing over the donation, said this stands to testify to the US’s unwavering commitment to the Ethiopian people. The contribution, he said, is a critical addition to the billions of dollars in resources and expertise that the American people have invested in Ethiopia’s health system in recent years.
Dr. Lia Tadesse, Ethiopia’s Minister of Health appreciated President Donald Trump’s generous contribution and that of the American people to the Ethiopian citizens and said that the two countries shared a long history of cooperation, and the support of the United States Government over the years has helped strengthen and enhance the Ethiopian health system.
USAID is providing a complimentary package of support to make sure the ventilators have “an immediate impact on the health of Ethiopian citizens”. The package of support includes companying equipment, warranty and service plans, and training for Ethiopian medical professionals. This donation is a part of the more than US$71 million that the United States has committed so far to Ethiopia in response to the pandemic.
