Ethiopia has exported electricity valued at US$66.4 million to neighboring Sudan and Djibouti in the Ethiopian fiscal year that ended on July 7.
This was announced by Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP), which has noted that the earnings surpassed its target of US$57 million set for the year at 16 percent. Close to $ US29.3 million has been obtained from the exports to Sudan, while the rest, US$37.1 million is accounted by Djibouti. A major reason for achieving the target of electricity production was Ethiopia’s ability in managing power outage and adequate rainfall.
Ethiopia has embarked on electricity integration with other African nations, such as Tanzania, South Sudan, and Somaliland. The transmission line that links Ethiopia’s power grid to Kenya is to be completed and will go operational soon. This will help Kenya to bridge its widening demand and supply gap in electricity.
