Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that his country  will not harm the neighboring Egypt and Sudan while operating the Renaissance Dam . Months of negotiations over the Renaissance Dam, situated upstream of the two countries, have failed to produce any agreement.

Egypt  holds the view that the dam would have devastating effects on its economy since  the Nile river’s flow would be diminished to fill up the dam’s reservoir. That would deny Egypt its main source of scarce fresh water resources.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said he  would address the concerns of downstream countries and reach a mutually beneficial outcome in the context of the ongoing African Union-led process. This assurance was given while addressing the United Nations General Assembly.

Abiy Ahmed faces a major challenge in his country because of the unrest that shook Ethiopia.   The marginalized groups are seeking more say in the country’s politics. They have been protesting because they feel their interests were overlooked. The long awaited first free elections were postponed to 2021 because of the pandemic. The elections are being held two years after Abiy Ahmed was sworn in as Ethiopia’s Prime Minister. The opposition alleges that the government is using Covid-19 as an alibi to postpone the election and to stay in power.
