Ethiopia intends to step up its electricity export to Sudan

· The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia (MOFA) has stated that it intends to Increase its electricity export to Sudan to 1,000 Megawatts when the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) project and the transmission line are finalized. Currently Ethiopia exports about 100MW of electric energy to Sudan annually.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia (MOFA) has stated that it intends to Increase its electricity export to Sudan to 1,000 Megawatts when the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) project and the transmission line are finalized. Currently Ethiopia exports about 100MW of electric energy to Sudan annually.

Sudan and Ethiopia are in the process of negotiating a bilateral agreement for the installation of the second power interconnection line which will enable Ethiopia to export 1,000MW of electric energy to Sudan when the GERD Project is complete. The interconnection line extends from the GERD to Khartoum.

In a statement issued on March 10th, MOFA underlined the significance of

Energy connectivity in facilitating mutual growth and cooperation between the two countries. GERD project will make available much needed hydroelectric power at an affordable market price.

Electricity production from the GERD inaugurated

The $5bln GERD dam, after completion, has the capacity to produce over 5,000MW electricity more than doubling Ethiopia’s electricity output. Apart from bridging the electricity deficit within the country, Ethiopia envisions exporting power to neighbouring nations including Sudan, and beyond.
