Ethiopia honours best performers in Coffee farming and exports

  • About 200 coffee farmers, processors, unions, and exporters were recognized and awarded by President Sahle-Work and other top officials. The ceremony highlighted the importance of taking Ethiopian coffee to new heights by motivating farmers and facilitating their entry into global markets.

During the fiscal year 2021/22, Ethiopia registered record earnings from Coffee exports. The country earned US $ 1.4 billion from 300,000tons of coffee exported to the international market, breaking the previous records both in terms of revenue (54%) and volume (20,4%).

To honour the key players, the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority organized a recognition and reward program on September 15, 2022.During the event, about 200 coffee farmers, processors, unions, and exporters were recognized and awarded by President Sahle-Work and other top officials. Congratulating the awardees President Sahle-Work underlined the key role of the private sector in a country’s development. The ceremony highlighted the importance of taking Ethiopian coffee to new heights by motivating farmers and facilitating their entry into global markets.

The 2022 Ethiopia Cup of Excellence, a competition and auction, was another record-breaking achievement for Ethiopian Coffee. The event witnessed $1.3 million auction for the country’s best coffee with the participation of around 170 buyers from 23 countries. The coffee of this year’s winner, Legesse Botasa, was sold at a staggering price of $884.10 per kilogram. The competition has encouraged hundreds of Coffee farmers to produce better quality coffee and compete at the global level.
