Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and foreign Minister of Ethiopia, will visit Turkey starting today (Monday) to hold discussions with senior government officials in Ankara. During the talks, bilateral issues of importance will be discussed. Apart from taking stock of the regional and international issues, the visit will be used for evolving a consensus for taking the bilateral trade and investment forward between the two countries.
The visit of the Deputy Prime Minister coincides with the 125th anniversary of the commencement of the diplomatic relations between the two countries. Importantly, Ethiopia has built a new embassy in Ankara, which will be officially inaugurated during the visit.
Turkey accords a lot of importance to Ethiopia both in trade and investment. Ethiopian coffee is heavily marketed in Turkey. Also, some of the Turkish companies have investments in Ethiopia in sectors like mining, infrastructure, water treatments etc. Both countries will be taking steps for boosting trade and investment ties. Also, Turkey can consider Ethiopia a gateway to the Horn of Africa against the backdrop of the formation of the AfCFTA, the pan Africa trade bloc, the largest free trade zone in the world.
