In a significant development, the Federal government of Ethiopia announced that its army has taken control of Mekelle City in their final assault against Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces. The federal troops launched the law enforcement operation which targeted Mekelle City – the stronghold of TPLF forces.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed commented on the troops for their valor and people in the region for their cooperation in grappling with the divisive forces. He added that no severe civilian casualties were reported during the fighting and vowed to quickly repair the infrastructure and other civic facilities damaged due to weeks-long fight.
Abiy also said that the government would take effective steps for bringing back refugees who had fled to neighboring Sudan. Right steps would be taken by the government along with international agencies to rebuild the Trigaya and to restore normal life in the region, he stressed. Independent sources, however, maintained that restoration of peace in the region and rebuilding the damaged infrastructure and buildings may take time since the extent of destruction is quite high and Ethiopia would need heavy assistance from external sources. The international agencies insisted that the peace process should be kicked off at the earliest to ward off alienation of people and to bring them to the mainstream.
