Ethiopia celebrated the second filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). A large number of government supporters gathered at Meskel Square in Addis Ababa Yesterday (Thursday) to demonstrate solidarity with the Ethiopian military. They also denounced rebels in the country’s Tigray region.
The dam is a pivotal point of controversy with Egypt and Sudan. Both Egypt and Sudan are against unilateral filling of the dam, which they complain would affect their interests. Egypt is more vocal about their protests since they allege that it would adversely affect the availability of water for both agricultural and household purposes. The issue is due to be discussed by the UN Security Council to reach an amicable solution.
The demonstration is the first public rally after the national election held in June. Mayor of Addis Ababa Adanech Abebe was the speaker at the rally. He congratulated Ethiopians’ resolve at getting the dam refilled. Demonstrators were from different parts of Addis Ababa.
