Record power cuts have caused shortages of some staples, spiralling prices of essential goods keeping them beyond the reach of ordinary people. These are the findings of the agricultural industry body AgriSA, a body involved in taking up the issues of agriculture and farmers.

Scheduled blackouts have burdened Africa’s most industrialised economy for years. The state-owned energy firm Eskom is failing to keep pace with demand due to its ageing coal power infrastructure.

Power cuts have also slowed down operations at poultry and slaughterhouses, triggering meat shortages in a country where it is consumed daily in large quantities.  South Africa’s record power cuts are causing shortages of some staples making  some popular items too expensive for poor families
