Ethio telecom announced pre-commercial 5G services in Addis Ababa at six mobile stations, which provide a speed of up to 10 Gbs, and a latency of less than 1 ms. It also will help expand the communication capability of up to a million connections in a square kilometer, according to Ethio sources.

The full commercialization of the service depends on the readiness and demand from the players in the ecosystem. The high speed of the fifth-generation (5G network), along with its superior reliability and negligible latency, will favorably impact industries. It will impact how the industry is run and the digitization drive of the country. The immediate beneficiaries of the 5G rollout, like in any other country, will be manufacturing plants, remote health care, precision agriculture, self-driving vehicles, IoT, and real-time operations.

Ethio telecom has been providing 3G and 4 G to its customers. That constitutes 97 percent of the telecom service provider’s coverage. In addition to the network expansion, Ethio telecom has introduced a variety of products and services including digital services, mobile money, and online services.
