Eskom’s power generation system was severely affected due to two generation units tripping recently. Eskom said that it had lost a unit each at Medupi and Tutuka power stations, amounting to a total loss of about 1 300MW. The power utility firm informed that the constrained power situation could persist through the weekend and appealed to the public to use electricity sparingly.
Eskom earlier announced that it would be implementing load reduction – a form of localized rolling blackouts – in parts of Gauteng, which has experienced load reduction for a full five hours for a few days. This had led to localized rolling blackouts since June. Eskom has attributed it to a high incidence of illegal connections, meter
bypasses and vandalism. Eskom earlier said the lockdown had dramatically reduced power demand.
The power utility also announced that it would curtail electricity supply to Magareng local municipality from 8 July because of non-payment. Eskom was planning to effect daily power interruptions to four other local municipalities in the Northern Cape – Kamiesberg, Khai-Ma, Richtersveld and Tsantsabane.
