South Africa’s power utility- Eskom – announced that power cuts have been suspended until further notice thanks to improved generation capacity and lower demand. It is not clear how long the suspension of the power cuts will last. This will give respite to some 60 million South Africans, who faced extreme power cuts in recent times, sometimes load shedding lasting for 12 hours daily.

South Africa’s industry has been largely affected by chronic power. Eskom supplies the vast majority of the country’s electricity. The power utility has a fleet of dilapidated and failing coal-fired power plants, which are unable to produce enough power. They resort to power blackouts to address the deficit.

The company is having massive debt. The load-shedding costs the economy more than US$50 million a day in lost production. More than 80% of the power is generated using coal as the feedstock. The country approved a US$98 billion investment plan last year at COP27 as part of an agreement for a just transition to clean energy.
