The politically unstable Horn of Africa nation Somalia, plunged into deeper chaos after its most powerful leaders, President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble clashed on the issue of selection of who to head the intelligence service. The rift intensified after the two leaders named two different persons. Tensions between both leaders have been brewing for months.
The tensions started between the two when president Mohamed unilaterally extended his four-year term by two years in April this year. This led to the army factions loyal to each take rival positions in the capital, Mogadishu. The tension was diffused after the president put Roble in charge of security and organising delayed legislative and presidential elections which was again postponed.
The president has been accused of obstructing effective investigation of the disappearance of Ikran Tahlil Farah, a 25-year-old officer with NISA, who was abducted while working in the intelligence agency’s cybersecurity department. Several Somalis have taken to social media to denounce the agency and demand justice.
