The environmentalists from the Sub-Saharan African region decried the United States Climate Envoy John Kerry for giving lip service to the continent’s green aspirations. The campaigners alleged that Kerry, who addressed the 18th session of the African Ministerial Conference on Environment (AMCEN) held on Sept.13-16 in Dakar, Senegal, was indifferent to the plight of Africa’s vulnerable population who bore the brunt of the climate crisis.
Mithika Mwenda, the executive director of Nairobi-based Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), the West failed to honour their commitments to support Africa in its struggle against the worsening climate crisis that pushed Africa deeper into poverty, inequality, conflicts and epidemics. The US has yet to prove its commitments to support climate hotspots of the Sahel and Horn of African region to cope with the phenomenon.
Augustine Njamnshi, the Chair, Technical and Political Committee of PACJA held the US responsible for run-away greenhouse gas emissions that had worsened climatic shocks like droughts, cyclones and floods in Africa. He urged US to give Africa its fair share of climate finance to build its resilience.
