A major challenge facing the continent is inadequate air connectivity despite the launching of national airlines by most African countries.  Dozens of African airlines  suffered severe losses even prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, which impacted the aviation industry. Many who incurred heavy debts were forced to close or declare bankruptcy, including Air Namibia and South Africa’s Comair. South African Airways closed its international operations. The rising prices of aviation fuel added to the woes. African airlines are expected to record $4.1bn in losses this year. Among the African Airlines, Ethiopian Airways stands out connecting the continent, via its hub in Addis Ababa.

Now Emirates Plans to step up its connections to Africa through its Dubai hub by planning to add to its 22 routes, secure code-sharing agreements and so on. UAE has been strengthening its interests in Africa. Aviation experts say that while Emirates represents a good option for the east-west traveller, Ethiopian is better when it comes to north-south traffic. To become a key player in intra-Africa aviation, Emirates will need a huge network expansion.
