Emergency declared in Cape Verde

   Social and economic emergency would help to seek support from international community to finance welfare measures for families and businesses.

 

A social, as well as economic emergency, has been declared in Cape Verde. A combination of adverse factors such as the Pandemic, drought and the Russian invasion of Ukraine has created severe food shortage, galloping inflation and social unrest. The country’s tourism sector which contributed to 25% of GDP before COVID 19 was severely hit by the Pandemic adding to the economic distress.

Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva told a press conference in Praia that food insecurity has touched 9% against 2% in 2020.He added that social and economic emergency would help to seek support from the international community to finance welfare measures for families and businesses. The Government of Cape Verde had adopted several measures to support vulnerable families since last March 2021.The efforts were directed to stabilise food and oil prices. The estimated cost of the measures was €81.6 million by the end of 2022, he said.
