Egypt’s holdings of US Treasury bonds increased marginally during December 2021, on an annual basis. The data revealed by the US Treasury data showed that Egypt’s holdings of US bonds amounted to US$2.244 billion in November 2021, as against US$2.242 billion in the same month of 2020.
On a monthly basis, Egypt’s holdings of US Treasury bonds declined marginally during December 2021 at US$2.249 billion as against US US$2.249 billion last November.
Japan topped the list of the world’s largest holders of US bonds. It held bonds worth US$1251.3 billion. China’s exposure was the second largest at US$1072.3 billion, followed by the United Kingdom with US$440.6 billion.
GCC investments in US Treasury bills and bonds rose 0.1 percent, on a monthly basis, during last December, to US$221.74 billion from US$221.51 billion at the end of November 2021. This was mostly due to higher holding by Saudi and Kuwait.
Saudi Arabia’s investments was the highest among Gulf countries in US bonds, which rose by 2.14 percent to reach US$119 billion until the end of December 2021, as against US$116.5 billion as of last November.
