Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi bats for population control

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi called for measures to slow the birthrate in his country. He cited China’s one-child policy as an example. The President said that the country needed only 400,000 births per year. Egypt has a population of 105 million inhabitants.  It recorded nearly 2.2 million births in 2022, which the President said was beyond a manageable level

Interestingly, Egyptian Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, told a conference that having children is a matter of complete freedom. Thereupon, the President intervened to say that he did not agree with that statement, adding that leaving the freedom to people who potentially do not know the extent of the challenge may be an unwarranted approach;  the whole of society and the Egyptian state which will pay the price, he stressed. The president pointed out how the Chinese dealt with their population explosion way back in 1968 when they adopted a one-child norm, which Beijing officially abandoned in 2015, allowing married people to have a second child after controlling the population growth.

Sisi, a former army general is expected to run for a third term in elections in early 2024. It is to be seen how orthodox Egyptians would react to the statement of the president.
