Egyptian IT minister underscores digitization of Africa

 Amr Talaat, Minister of Communications and Information Technology of Egypt is hopeful of building a strong African Union by 2063 as envisaged by African leaders. He was speaking at the Gitex Global 2021 exhibition and conference.

The minister pointed out that several factors could enable the African continent to achieve its vision. Important among them are developing the communications infrastructure and providing Internet services at reasonable prices. He underscored the need for  developing the legislative and regulatory framework.

He highlighted Egypt’s cooperation with the African countries in developing communications infrastructure, such as high-quality and high-speed Internet services to African countries to achieve digital inclusion. A massive project is being implemented to provide high-speed internet to one million households within the first phase of the “Decent Life” initiative.

The minister informed that the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) approved the regulatory framework for establishing data centers and providing cloud computing services. Efforts are being taken to ingrain digital skills among young people and motivating people to launch start-ups.

He pointed out that the Knowledge City is being established in the New Administrative Capital as an integrated information society that includes all elements of the communications and information technology system. The Egyptian-African Center for Training in the Field of Communications Regulation was established, with the aim of creating professional cadres capable of dealing with the challenges of the sector, the minister said, adding that the center was accredited by the Universal Postal Union as a regional postal training center in the Middle East and Africa.
